June 1 has come and gone and everybody and their brother has Kingfish fever.  It's just like October 1 when everyone thinks because it's October it's instantly, ''Sheepshead time.''

Welcome to June!  The hot temperatures are here!

And with the lack of rain in May, the salinity levels are very high which seems to be helping our fishery… since we had all the fresh water in our waterways for so long.

Typically, it’s toward the end of May we first begin to see King Mackerel off our northern Florida coast.

It's teeth time. Bluefish [the green scourge fish], Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, jack crevalle & sharks!!!

Where do I start on this fishing report???  This past week we have seen a number of things change and there are quite a few different fish on the menu.

April is turning into a great month for redfish here in Palm Valley.  Large schools of redfish are holding off the main channel of the ICW.  These schools can be found cruising the banks visually or when casting live or artificial baits drifting.

I remember the days when everyone looked forward to 'real spring'.  Not when the calendar said so, but the fish said so.

And spring officially sprung for me on 4.7 because the ''Spanish macs' were thick! 

With the changing water temps and weather being more stable the fishing will get fired up.  Look for  schools of slot reds to bunch in the creeks through-out the month as schools of small pogies and finger mullet start finding their way in.  Target the deep holes at low outgoing and the first of incoming.

With Spring approaching, the ocean is beginning to warm.  As the water warms, the northerly fish migration begins, so in the coming weeks we will begin to see some changes in our fishery.

What to Know About the Tide and Current Before Heading Out

The last thing you need is to find your boat stuck grounded in the sand. When the tide changes, this can happen and it can be rather embarrassing. It can also be costly.

An alternative Winter Fish Species…  besides Sheepshead!!!

"Redfish's ugly cousin".  Yep, that's what I've always called them.  The Black Drum.  A favorite winter time species for me.  Not all that glamorous.  But you have to look at the positives.  And look beyond their appearance.  To have them in your personal favorites list.

This time of the year between October and April, we are in the Fall/Winter/Spring transition so the ocean is changing a lot. But if you can catch the weather right, the longer trips are best if you really want to fill the freezer.
