April is turning into a great month for redfish here in Palm Valley. Large schools of redfish are holding off the main channel of the ICW. These schools can be found cruising the banks visually or when casting live or artificial baits drifting.
When using live baits I will use live shrimp on a jig over mullet or mud minnows.
When stalking schooling fish, always approach from up current so you will not need the trolling motor.
When you find fish use the spot lock on your trolling motor or your power poles.
If the fish are just out of casting distance try a Rob Coxey Wind Cheater Weighted Popping Cork.* This will allow you to cast much further. With this rig I suggest using about 24" of 30 lb. fluorocarbon and a 3/0 circle hook.
The last two hours of the outgoing tide is working the best these days. Remember to wear your PFD while on the water. The life you save might be your own.
Good luck and I'll see you in the Valley.
*The Wind Cheater is available at: newconceptlures.com & Rick’s Bait Shop
