It's finally....''MY TIME''
I really do not have a ton of personal interest in summer.
Yes, I have to fish it. Not rich enough to beat the weather economically. Don’t have a second home in Maine, either.
But there's a few things that happen October 1st, each year:
The weather gets really transitional
The oceans currents cool our local waters
Inshore/river/inlet fishermen smile more, due to better fishing
Offshore fishermen frown more due to rougher seas
Offshore fishermen, turn into bull redfish fishermen
DID SOMEONE SAY, B-U-L-L REDFISH??
Yes, everyone seems to be doing it. It's the fall spawning season… from now till January, it's time to try your hand at the ''biggest of the Big.''
Of course, if you're looking for groceries, you'll have to get some mullet [3-5 inchers] and flounder fish. [also, a fall staple] since the bulls are of course ''just for the sport of it'' but perfect for the kids to catch a true whopper!
It's all bottom fishing, of course, right as the tide starts to slack in the river and all the way to the Mayport Jetties.
Heavier tackle, heavier sinkers (4-10oz.) and some stout hooks from 4/0-6/0 is good.
Baits are a personal preference: blue crab, mullet, ladyfish, bluefish, pogie chunks will all work. Even small live croakers.
I'm a chunker from way back. In the deeper areas & channel edges, I prefer a big chunk of something oily - that won't wash out. I seem to use the blue crab chunks only when those fall screaming tides slow down. It's all about ''smell' down where it's deep and dark.
Want to go learn the, ''in's and out's''? Book yourself a 6-hour day aboard my 26' Jettywolf. We do it all with loads of battle room, shade and comfort.
