As I understand it Jax Boat Club has a lot of family folks. Looking for an enjoyable day on the water and they do not want to dive into boat ownership, boat storage, boat maintenance, towing, insurance, etc.  They just want to have fun.

I know first-hand [and second and third too] because of the nature of my business as a 23-year charter fishing guide how hard it is, many times, for people to even feel a bite!  Or know when their sinker hits the bottom…  and when it does, how to keep it there.  There is a lot too “simply bottom fishing” the St. Johns River.  Around here, it's a learned skill fishing that current [aka Tides).

And I’m talking adults, not even bringing the youngsters into this conversation!

Here is the Traditional Float Rig:

You are about to hear my "Broken Record" start to play!  It’s getting louder in the background…  The traditional, Float-Rig.  The traditional, Float-Rig.  The Float-Rig….  Float Rig!!!

I know I have mentioned it many times in the last year and like a “Broken Record” here I am again.

So what's so special about fishing the Float-Rig?

First off, instead of fighting the current (tide), you can use it to your advantage.

Secondly, you never have to "feel" the bottom, or a "bite" for that matter because it's a visual fishing technique - just watch your ''float''.

Thirdly, no fancy tackle is needed.  Lightweight rods and reels, friendly for all to use.

And fourthly, starting RIGHT NOW through Mother's day - it is the best time of year to utilize the Float-Rig.

Bait is always a live Shrimp. Everything eats a Shrimp. So that means, "you can catch ANYTHING!"

Here's a Bonita, (little tunny) caught by Tom O. on the float-rig at the Mayport Jetties. Not an everyday catch!

There are many side benefits of learning how to float-rig fish, also.  You'll learn more about:

  1. water movement & current velocity

  2. how the tides work

  3. How to fish structure

  4. Precision anchoring.

Leanne, isn't a pro-angler. But caught this 23 lb. Bull Redfish using a Float-Rig on the rod and reel behind her. Not much larger than Bass tackle!

Take it from me. You can learn. And if I can help, please let me know.
